"Boob Clock" - Woodblock Print
Once each year, I aim to release a limited edition print and to offer it at a more affordable price than my unique work. I often use a different style or printing method than my primary work. It is an opportunity for me to experiment and to invite a different audience to live with my art.
This year I am offering 10 woodblock prints that were made while I was a visiting artist at The University of Northern Iowa this Fall. I worked side-by-side with the printmaking and photography teachers (Tim Dooley, Aaron Wilson and Noah Doely) and their students to realize an image that translates my imagery into a new medium: a laser-cut woodblock print, made with litho ink on rag paper.
This image uses a form I have been playing with that I refer to as “the boob clock”, which is symbolic of the female body as a time-keeping device or an embodied sundial. The boob clock encircles other shapes that suggest bone and hands that seem to be reaching, grabbing or tossing an escaping moon. When composing this image, I thought of visual styles that I associate with my mother and my early childhood; airbrushed t-shirts and record album covers from the late 70’s to early 80’s. The result is lush and earthy, with visible woodgrain, and is surprisingly playful. Enjoy.
